de-gournay-pompadour-16-inch-oval-serving-platter
Pompadour 16 Inch Oval Serving Platter

Richly decorated with peonies, leaves and pomegranates in a polychrome famille rose palette, the Pompadour design reproduces a circa 1745 Qianlong Chinese Export pattern known as the 'Pompadour Service'. Four outer cartouches alternate between emblems of a crowned eagle and a fish, symbols said to represent King Louis XV and his mistress, Madame de Pompadour, whose maiden name was Poisson. Whether conceived as satire or tribute, the design endures as a charming enigma of 18th-century taste.

Every de Gournay piece is shaped, painted and gilded entirely by hand at the brand's porcelain studio in Jingdezhen, China, the historic centre of porcelain making for over a thousand years. No transfers, decals or mechanical shortcuts are used, so the hand of the maker remains quietly visible: faint turning marks, gentle variations in brushwork, even an occasional thumbprint inside a moulded form. These are not flaws but signatures of true craftsmanship, giving every piece its own character.

Made to order: This piece can be fully or partially customised, from rim colours and colourway to the omission of parts of the design or the addition of monograms, armorials or personalised motifs, with a choice of Blanc de Chine, Pearl or Celadon glaze in a smooth or orange-peel finish.
